Overview
Dickson Store Museum is a typical 1930’s style General Store that sold groceries, hardware, dry goods, and included a Post Office. Our costumed interpreters will take you for a walk into the past as you view the restored living quarters of the Christiansen family on the second floor.
The former Post Office is a Gift Shop that features arts and crafts by local artists as well as Souvenir Plates, Spoons, and Pins. We sell a variety of old-fashioned candy and Foothills Ice Cream. Our large yard and picnic tables are a great place to enjoy a family picnic together.
Historical Information
Dickson is the oldest Danish settlement in Western Canada. It was settled in 1903 by seventeen Danish settlers from Nebraska. In 1905, Carl and Laura Christiansen, two of the original settlers, opened a post office in their home. In 1909, Carl built and opened the General Store in Dickson. The family lived on the second floor. The Christiansen family co ntinued to operate the store until it closed in 1980.
Restoration of the store began in 1987, and in 1991 it was officially opened as a museum by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. The store and living quarters now appear similar to the way they did in the 1930’s.
